Super Cruise: Hands-Free Driving

Super Cruise: Hands-Free Driving

Super Cruise is a handy assistant technology that makes any drive easier. This article will explore everything you need to know about Super Cruise. Using the technology is easy and requires following three simple steps. However, the models available with Super Cruise are limited to ones from recent years.

What Can It Do?

Driving hands-free is the main attractive concept of Super Cruise. Under the right conditions and with an aware driver and a compatible highway, the system can take control of acceleration and braking. The system can even handle lane changes thanks to the Lane Change on Demand feature available on selected Cadillac models from 2021 to 2023.

How Does it Work?

Using LiDAR mapping technology, the service has mapped over 640,000 km of compatible highways in Canada and the USA. Additionally, over 352,000 km of compatible and divided highways are available for the Super Cruise-equipped Cadillac CT6 and XT6. While not unlimited, the vast number of routes available make the Super Cruise functionality ideal for tackling nearly any road trip.

The hands-free driving experience relies on the software controlling acceleration and braking. This feature is active while the software is running and requires an attentive driver and good road conditions.

How to Start Using It?

Using the driving assistance tool is as easy as completing three simple steps.

Step 1

Before enabling Super Cruise, you need to activate Adaptive Cruise Control through the button located on your steering wheel. When active, the symbol lights up in white on your instrument cluster. If Adaptive Cruise Control is already set up, the symbol will display, alongside a speed, under a green illumination instead.

Step 2

It’ll activate when the Super Cruise technology detects that you’re driving on a compatible highway. However, it requires you to be paying proper attention and for several other driving conditions to be met. These conditions include visible lane markings, no detected faults, and a connected GPS. The Super Cruise symbol then lights up in white on the cluster.

Step 3

When it becomes safe, you can press the Super Cruise button on your steering wheel. Activating the technology, you’ll need to wait until the symbol and the steering wheel light bar illuminate green. Once green, it’s time to take your hands off the steering wheel. It’s essential to wait until the steering wheel’s bar is green before you let go of it.

Press the button again or the brake pedal lightly to disengage the technology and retake control of the wheel.

Which Cadillac Models Come With the System?

Only a handful of models are currently available with the Super Cruise technology. These six models are the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ, 2021-2023 Cadillac Escalade, 2022-2023 XT6, 2021 and 2023 Cadillac CT4, 2021 and 2023 Cadillac CT5, and the 2018-2020 Cadillac CT6. However, we can expect this technology to become more standardized with each passing year.
